Marriage Tips to do while “Hunkering in Place”

by Mercy Dennis, LMFT

First....Plan a Daily schedule so you have work time, exercise time, couple-only together time, family time and personal time..

Read out loud a book together and share your thoughts about it..

Write a poem to your partner and read it to them Find some good dance music and work off some of that energy... Do some of the dances you maybe never had the opportunity to learn.....look up and research on YouTube ....the twist .. jitterbug.. the swim.. the swing..the Charleston..salsa..African...etc. there are so many how-to dance videos available..... try it....! Make up your own dance ..

Dress each other in a crazy costume and video tape each other doing their favorite dance.. Take this opportunity to have a dinner date at home... Get out the candles set the table and get takeout from your favorite restaurant... You might have to put the kiddos to bed first...

Do some couple yoga... zumba ..meditation......again great how-to videos on YouTube

Go for a walk, hike or ski and explore someplace where you’ve not been before...take advantage of the wide open spaces...

Take a drive and check out neighborhoods that are new to you... If there is 6 feet between folks get out and take a walk through the neighborhood Call or FaceTime somebody that you haven’t talked to for a long time... This is a great time for renewed connections

Each write a short story about your relationship focusing on memories from the past... dreams for the future... or just plain fantasy...

Go for a “run in place”....run together and share with each other the sites you “see” along the way..

Plan a fantasy vacation together.. Enjoy a virtual vacation...

Close your eyes and each verbally share a guided meditation to a relaxing, peaceful place in your mind.. don’t forget to include all the senses..

The Gottman Institute has great Marriage Minutes...sign up free today.... https://www.gottman.com/marriage-minute/

Individually search YouTube for a favorite clip and share it with your partner...focus on a particular topic if you want...like find the funniest animal video...a favorite story.. music video...what is love.. be creative in your searching..

Write each other a love letter.... Check out some Ted Talks...each chose a subject..Brene Brown has some great ones...

Create an imaginative, fanciful, exotic, intimate experience for the two of you.....

Take an internet class together .....learn a language or how to cook something.....whatever tickles your fancy..

Have a “bake-off” each making something using the same ingredients or limiting it to a choice of 5 ingredients..

Make bread together.....get in there and knead together with your hands...

Sing together....

Serenade your partner with your favorite love song (lip sync if you are not a “singer”)

Many of these ideas can be adapted for the whole family

Share with me any couple ideas and experiences that you have had so I can share them with the “secret list”....

Have Fun.....
